Day2 - Motor City: Heidelberg Project

The day began humbly, at a Walmart parking lot in Cleveland.

By noon we had found our way to a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop in Detroit, Anthology. The hipster making our drinks told us about how he and some others had banded together to fix up a space in this old industrial building and make the shop. His story helped detail the rise and fall of the Detroit auto industry, up into the present day.

On his recommendation, we hit the waterfront, where we met a variety of people who also recommended places to see. From there we drove around and ended up at Heidelberg Street, where we had heard there was some type of art exhibit.

There we spent the afternoon, walking amongst the found-object sculptures, speaking to the creators and care takers, and then meditating on what it all meant: for Detroit and for us.

We ended up leaving the place emotionally and mentally drained. Tyree, the main mind behind the Heidelberg Project, had asked us some tough questions - questions we didn't have answers to: what is your purpose, what makes you happy, etc.

I thought I had gone on this road trip to find answers to similar questions, but Tyree and the others on H st made me wonder if I have spent too much time in my life, not committing to anything, always looking for the perfect fit before I jump in with both feet and a full heart.

As we pondered the days events, we headed to a park outside the city limits where we felt safe staying the night. There we met 3 kindred spirits, who informed us that the park would close at some point, but then invited us to stay near them!

The night ended with all of us in the local brewery, sharing stories and making grand plans about adventures to come.

As I fell asleep amid the suburban murmur

I felt deeply at peace
