Fact: we could do ourselves and the world a HUGE favor by eating less sugar and red meat

Sadly, the USDA's main clients are the industrial food producing giants, so their recommendations don't include much suggestion as to eating local and evading processed foods.

But I don't need some governmental organization's suggestions to know that a tomato from the local farm tastes better and is better for me and the Earth than a tomato grown on some factory farm.

“Food production is the largest user of fresh water, largest contributor to the loss of biodiversity, and a major contributor to using up natural resources,” says Miriam Nelson, director of the John Hancock Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention at Tufts University.
